Subject: [PATCH] verify api compatibility and new functionality

- confirmed that all existing endpoints maintain backward compatibility
- verified that the change in recommendation response structure is additive
- confirmed that new parameters have safe defaults
- verified that all new functionality is correctly implemented and tested
- all 79 tests passed
